The New Testament suggests that it’s people’s belief in God that makes Him able to help them.
Jesus suggests various places in the New Testament that when he heals people, it’s because they believe he can. One example is when Jesus heals a leper: “Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.” (Luke 17:19) Jesus says the same to a blind man when he receives his sight. (Mark 10:52)
The New Testament also suggests that unbelief can prevent miracles: “And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” (Matthew 13:58)
When people ask for a sign or proof, that’s unbelief. In everyday life, it often makes sense not to believe in people. Belief in God is different, however: it’s one more example of the difference between humans and God.
