The Bible warns against respect of persons. What does that mean, and why the warning?
To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.
-Proverbs 28:21
What does “respect of persons” mean in this context? It means, as I understand, respect for people based on their positions in society. Therefore, respecting someone because they are a governor or royalty is an example of having respect of persons.
The Bible points out that “respect of persons is not good” for the reason that anyone, regardless of their position, might be corruptible. Assuming someone is trustworthy because of their elevation in society might expose one to said corruption. In turn, the whole society might become vulnerable.
